What is the importance of Mathematical Practice #3? The Math Instructional Leaders are answering this question in this month book study on the "5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions". Read through their reflections posted on their campus blogs regarding the importance of student math discussions.
Students should be able to develop and defend their reasoning/understanding of a new concept and be able to critique the reasoning of others. When you are lesson planning this month, how does your team plan on developing Mathematical Practice #3?
When your team is planning an upcoming lesson, review the "Student look-fors" for Mathematical Practice #3. Build strategies or structures into your lesson that provide students opportunities to communicate their mathematical reasoning. Structure classroom discourse where students can defend their thinking and learn from their mistakes.
Here is a great blog from Education Weekly on how students learn from their mistake.
What are your team plans for building this student Mathematical Practice?

New Year...New Learning
Career Track (True North Logic TNL) is up and running so I am proud to announce a new venture for PUHSD math teachers....(drum roll here)...on-line professional development. Whenever I collect surveys from teachers who have particpated in a professional growth course, the largest complaint is the time, date, or location. Some teachers want after school sessions while others would prefer weekends. Now you do not have to choose! The newest professional growth course for math teachers, "How do you create "mathematical habits of mind"? Discover the 8 mathematical practices from the Common Core " can be completed anytime/anywhere. The class begins January 17th and you will complete the self-paced course over a 6-week time frame.
If you are interested in being a part of the new online learning opportunity, you can watch the video tour of Career Track to learn how to register for the course. I am looking forward to facilitating this new course and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me at toncheff@phoenixunion.org.
